The missis has said she will get me a skid lid for my birthday at the end of the month and my budget is around a hundred quid. Any recomendations? I know its an mtb lid but i like the look of the giro xen(white camo). Colours have to be black/red/white.

Any help would be great.

  • My mrs bought me the Halford Boardmans road lid for xmas! and to be honest its great. fits really well, feels secure and comfy has good venting. Its fully adjustable and costs £60 including a decent hard carry box! better still it has a carbon inner frame for strength! I really cant see any need to pay more!

Get the one that fits you the best, you really should try out a good selection, before making your mind up.

FWIW. I love my Giro Pneumo, although it's now discontinued.

Bugger all point in me telling you what I like as it may not fit you. Go to a bike shop and try one on there - fit is everything.
(unless you're a woman - 60% of them admitted to buying shoes they knew didnt fit them - mad !)

If you're riding on the road - then get a road helmet ?

Assuming fit's you ok - Specialized S-works 2-D lid is the best / lightest I have owned. I have tried Giro lids and owned an Atmos, but could never get a perfet fit. Comes with removeable visor to equally suited to MTB or road.

Little over your budget on rrp, but often turn up cheaper on the web.

As others have said, you need to try a few on first, but one for your shortlist anyway.

coming from the world of downhill where there is only one helmet any discerning rider would want, im just after opinions of some decent lids. Of course i'm going to try a few on im not just going to buy something on the say so from some one, i just wanted to know if there are any clear winners and ones to stay clear of. Theres just so much choice!

Pfft there's plenty of top DH helmets :p

As for roadie lids I'd second the vote for a Spesh S-works 2D (assuming they fit your head shape), light and well-ventilated and look pretty decent (as helmets go). Pretty good crash replacement warranty to (£50 for a new one when I split mine...)

Giro Ionos is super in my climate, as the venitlation is fantastic. The Atmos was a dud helmet, lots of broken ones thanks to the design at the front..... avoid.

Pricey, but very comfortable, and I needed the best air flow I could here. (Today was 32 deg C. 82% humidity. At 7am.)

The Lazer Genesis one was a close second in comfort stakes...

  • Take a look at the LAS squalo. Mines in red white and black, super cool in looks and also when on the head. It's the best fitting and comfiest helmet i've ever had.
Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!

cheap option is the polystyrene base from any toaster packing, and a shoelace to tie it on.
