I went to Wales for a week last year and stayed in the Brecon area. There are lots of natural XC routes round there (routes available from http://www.mtbbreconbeacons.co.uk/ ). Brechfa and Afan and both under an hour drive away for doing the trail centre thing.

If you want to ride trail centres exclusively then I think there is a greater concentration of them in North Wales but you check here: http://mbwales.com/

If you're going by train I assume you are looking to stay in one place rather than moving around too much?

One possibility is to base yourself at Machynlleth. It's a pleasant little town with plenty of bike friendly accomodation in the area.

There are a number of waymarked routes (Mach 1-3) out of the town and the Climachx trail a short ride away in the Dyfi forest (see http://www.dyfimountainbiking.org.uk/). There are also a lot of natural trails in the Dyfi forest worth exploring and the local bike shops could probably point you in the right direction. There are other possibilities - heading south there is an epic ride which links up with the trails at Nant-y-Arian. There is also a bus which carries bikes (at least used to) which runs from Mach to Dolgellau (http://www.arrivabus.co.uk/service-info ... wales-x32/ ). It's a shortish road ride from Dolgellau to Coed-y-Brenin and all that has to offer.
  • Just to let you know buses actually stop in Coed Y Brenin now, and they do have bike racks on the back.
  • Afan is i n the south of wales and is brilliant for a holiday as it has 4 red trails and a black it is brilliant and the locals are very friendly
    check it out

    Just ride.
  • There are a few trail centres in wales, afan and coed y brenin the most popular and best facilities. I recenty took a trip to the brecon beacons and although the website (http://www.mtbbreconbeacons.co.uk/ ) seems good it lacks vital information like exactly where the trails start from. The towns shown on the site are not actually where they begin.

Try looking at www.mbwales.com where you can find all the trail centres and accomodation etc. Id reccomend going to afan and staying at the afan lodge b&b.

As well as Machnylleth and Afan, Betws y Coeds is accessible by train for the Marin Trail and Penmachno, and I expect there's more around there if you know where to look.
