I got stuck here, bailed out, bike stayed like that.
Off-road in the snow is fun! On-road in the snow is fun but not quite as much. Also, on gritted roads, MTBs are hella slow. Dude.

Stuck to the roads today around Baildon - snow is just hard work!Faster than a tent.......0 -
Riding in snow is knackering. The compact stuff is much, much better.FCN 2-4.

Agreed, definitely hard work. Good fun though, you can just stand up and push!0

Rolf, I can see those rabbit prints by the side of you - trotting along in a straight line, not a care in the world. Was he mocking you?0

Chapeau both of you! I don't really have the bike for that stuff (the Cadenza would be OK-ish, just not with a Marathon/Sport Contact tyre combo) but looks like fun....definitely not jealous of ITB & co today mind you!!Dahon Speed Pro TT; Trek Portland

He was - but note where the prints end....... (I photoshopped out the red stains to protect the squeamish  )Faster than a tent.......0 -
Note the dice valve caps LiT took off the Viner and put on the Muddy fox for the snow rideI've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Yeah, a few of us from the club went offroad today with a couple of guys from Reading CTC - was fun, then really hard, then scary and unnerving, then really hard again.
The two CTC guys seemed fine, and we had a couple of good cyclo-cross racers who were coping fine, then there was me and the club president - he on a Surly 1x1 - and when he stopped cos of the gearing, I'd stop behind, and not be able to get going again.
Still, was a good excuse to cover for the fact that I was blowing out my arse and not very happy on the slippy stuff.
We left the four to ride back into Reading on the road - it should take about 20 minutes - it took us an hour and a half!!!
Still - fat tyres and low low pressure worked pretty well in the proper snow, and was ok on the roads, but yeah, hella-slow!
Only came off twice in the powder - one clipless moment when trying to restart, and another where I flatly just carked it! Managed to avoid landing on the tree stump though.
Anyone else finding their core muscles are really really achey now - from fighting all the time to keep the bike rubber-side down?Cannondale Synapse 105, Giant Defy 3, Giant Omnium, Giant Trance X2, EMC R1.0, Ridgeback Platinum, On One Il Pompino...0 -

Mine were ok last week, but didn't have to cope with the stuff you did. I found had to concentrate a lot harder though!FCN 2-4.

Nope, I'm not jealous, really! Was indeed fun for you loonies, quite clearly. Full suspension of the properly working kind probably rather handy for those downhills (I don't think my 20" soft-tail would cut it!)....Dahon Speed Pro TT; Trek Portland

Spent 5 hours up Leith Hill on Saturday.
Getting UP the hill sucked (not helped by riding a bike with a lowest gear or 36/32 and sporting a 160mm fork). Coming back down again - absofookinlutely hilarious. Especially if you did the same run a few times to pack the snow down a little. Hitting jumps in the snow was amusing too. No idea what the bike was going to do on landing.
Foot out, flat out, pinned. Duuuuuuude...0 -
Having been amazed at the sheer weight of that muddy fox (dice valve caps not helping) I really think I'd wuss out of jumping it. If I could even get it off the ground, that is.
Saying that, I think I'd wuss out of jumping pretty much any bike.

L_i_T,
Sounds as if the bike is not yours - so apologies to the owner - but Muddy Fox probably qualifies as a mountain bike shaped object. These things are usually pretty damn heavy even by MTB standards! And the snow would have made it feel even heavier."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -

Ahhh well that explains it! It's my brother's crappy old MTB - ie the one he lets me borrow!
