Which Cannondale ?

After thoroughly enjoying nearly a year on my Scott Speedster S40, thanks to the C2W Scheme, I am already thinking about which bike to get this year. I have been reading some really good reviews about the Cannondale CAAD bikes, so I thought I might give them a go.

The question is, CAAD9 with Tiagra or CAAD8 with 105 ??

Buy both, switch groupsets, sell CAAD 8.

    CAAD9. Highly rated bike.
Loads of scope for upgrades...

    NapD's plan -
Buy CAAD9 Strip the tiagra off and sell. Buy Sram Rival. Crush your friends.

bizarrely I had exactly the same plan!!!

I might splash out on Force rather than Rival (for purely bling reasons only)
  • Whats the difference between the CAAD8 and CAAD9?
I ride a CAAD9 and can vouch for its utter fantasticness - is the CAAD8 just the frame which preceded the CAAD9?
    Cannondale Supersix / CAAD9 / Boardman 9.0 / Benotto 3000
  • go for the best frame: you can upgrade it. No point having nice kit on a frame you don't feel confident on. CAAD9 got a 9/10 from Cycling+ in recent mag
    Go for the break
    Create a chaingang
Make sure you don't break your chain

No, CAAD8 is heavier (Frame weight is over half a pound more) and has a taller head tube. It's cheaper (Obviously) but the geometry is apparently aimed more at sportive riding.

Look at Feb 2010 Cycling Plus and group review of bikes - the CAAD9 Tiagra comes out top of the group with a 9/10 (even above a carbon framed bike.) They rave about the frame. By the by the tester had to do a high speed safety maneuver when a car pulled out on him and find a gap between the errant car and one coming up the hill at him. Its surefootedness was really put to the test!

For my 2009 caad9 I upgraded the tyres to some michellin krylion carbons and bought a nice liquigas bottle. How restrained is that! It feels a lovely bike to ride.

Oh I think this years caad9 has the BB30 which is a plus on last years model :D

Im sure Im missing something here, but I am looking at getting the CAAD 9 and am a bit confused about the prices.

The price seems to be £999.99 -(in all the reviews I have seen)

But why is this one reduced from £899.99

looking at the spec I see it is Tiagra Triple - in your opinion is this worth it for £100 less (not that they have it in my size - but I could look elsewhere!)

    It's the 2009, not the 2010...

    No real difference though!

Is the 2010 still made in USA

The 2010 frames are still made in the USA - production is planned to shift at the end of 2010.

Thanks for all the replies guys, have now had chance to see both bikes in the flesh and the CAAD9 blows the 8 out the water for the overall finish. Will be ordering one just as soon as my current C2W has finished !!! :D

    I'm a little confused......

On the Cannondale website it list CAAD9 1 4 5 6 all different models.

    Which one we talking about?

I think the model Ricey is referring to is the CAAD9 - 6 with tiagra

    The CAAD9 -5 has 105 on, the CAAD9 - 7 has sora

What's wrong with the Scott? Seems a little extravagant upgrading from an alu frame to another alu frame. the CAAD9 does have BB30 and is lighter, but i'm not so sure it will be noticeable.

Have you thought about upgrading your Scott? A decent set of wheels will make a night and day difference, and it will be transferable to a carbon or Ti bike if you do decide to splash out the cash later.

Is that the US 'Dale website? The UK one (here) lists them as follows:

    CAAD 9 Ultegra Compact
    CAAD 9 105 Compact
    CAAD 9 105 Triple
    CAAD 9 Tiagra Compact
    CAAD 9 Tiagra Triple

+1 for the CAAD 9 - the 2010 bikes have a BB30 bottom bracket sleeved to take a normal BB; the sleeve can be pushed out if you want to. I don't think the 2009 bikes (at least, those available in the UK) were BB30.
