Chain length calculation?

I'm about to change my chainset, from a standard double (53/39) to a compact (50/34).
Rear cassettes from 23/11 to 27/12.
God only knows why I thought a Satndard Double would be good on a Winter trainer
How do I work out the new chain length?
I haven't been successful in finding any calcs for this.
Even if I don't need to adjust the chain length, I'd like the calculation, for future use...

My unscientific method is to put the new chain on the small ring at the front and the smallest gear on the rear and take out enough links so the chain just clears the derailleur cage.
  • no normal calculation is large front ring to large rear plus 2 links,
    dont only ride a bike
