I have always found the Nina Simone version, done in her own distinctive and reflective style is sublime.

Or Bob Dylan on the "Dylan" album.

But you're right, the song is pretty cool. Pity it will get attempted by celebrities who aren't either musicians, songwriters or vocalists. Leave that tripe to the kids.

  • Indeedy, a truly great song Aggie, but I can't be doing with all that Sam Davis posturing and poncing around though.

It's written by Mr Bob Dylan who IMHO has the original killer version with a great vocal coupled with a haunting backing girl chorus that sends tingles down ya spine:-

Jerry Jeff Walker who wrote and sang the original in 1968 would be suprised at Dylan's original version.

As Andy F said, not a Dylan composition; written by Jerry Jeff Walker.

Dylan's version is almost in 3/4 time, which gives it a waltz like rhythm. Compare it to the version of Like a Rolling Stone recorded in 1965 and which makes it onto the Bootleg Series Vol 1-3. Similarly set in a waltz time.

    Dylan sermon over.

  • Epitome of cool........"Green Onions" by Booker T & The MGs.

(Not a song ,strictly speaking, as it's an instrumental, but cooler than than a polar bears ar*se.)
    Two wheels good,four wheels bad
  • In my opinion anything by Iggy Pop & The Stooges could qualify as the coolest song ever.

Arghh! It's not often I'm right, but I'm wrong this time! But I still think Dylan has the killer version... and the Green Onions tune is also a super-cool selection.

Don't forget we're talking old style Las Vegas showmanship and he was certainly a showman who could dance and entertain. He is also, of course, adding touches of 'Mr Bojangles'. The life story of Bill Robinson, the 'Mr Bojangles', for those that don't know it, is very interesting - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Robinson

Green Onions is nice with a great version here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcaIiyIJGso Shame the interview from the show isn't included because he is such a gent.

"Harry's Theme" by Clannad, well spooky sounds, haunting. Age-less like a modern Gregorian chant.
Also, "Here I am Baby, come and take me," by Al Brown, reggae version.
Somehow it's better than Al Greens original version, which was fantastic too.
  • The coolest song ever is Downtown Train by Tom Waits. Don't listen to the Rod Stewart version - that will give you ear-cancer and piles.
