I have just been on the trek website and you can have a 'custom madone 5 series' where you get to pick the colour of the frame and what different components you want. I clicked on the custom madone 5 series and picked the custom madone 5.2 and specced it with shimano 105 and various different components, then i picked a custom madone 5.9 and specced it exactly the same as the 5.2 and the 5.9 came to £2449.00 whereas the 5.2 came to £2347.00, i don't actually get this because the 5 series madone frame is meant to be the same so are they ripping people off, what is with the £150 odd price difference?

The 5.9 is a ever so slightly better frame. A few grams lighter I believe. (But Trek don't publish frame weights so hard to verify this.)
You're better off sticking with the 5.2 and saving the cash to upgrade elsewhere. Get better wheels for instance.
I've had a 5.2 and currently have a 6.9. 6.9 is lighter, but they are basically the same frame.0 -
They're definitely the same frame, im saying this because all of the websites talking about the 5 series refer to it as one frame, and trek would label it as a higher frame because it is more appealing. I'm sure trek wouldn't rip poeple off i'm just trying to work out what is different :?Ribble Gran Fondo

The 5.9 starts with a higher spec (and higher base price) - and it looks like the way Project One works is it just adds or subtracts to the base price depending on your choices. If you're right and the 5.9 and 5.2 frames are exactly alike, then it's just a glitch in the system or their pricing structure that give you different prices for the same build.
I tried it with a 6.5 and 6.9 and came out about £50 apart for the same final build.0
