Could this be a Warranty Claim?

Hi, not too technical with bikes hence the reason for this question.
I purchased a GT Aggressor XCR in April from Halfords and the bike has been really good and i've been really pleased with it up until now.
However, the chain started slipping last night and then all of a sudden bang and jam, got off, checked it out, and the rear derailier has bent right upwards pointting at 12 oclock instead of 6 oclock.....
Do you think this could be considered a warranty claim or not?
I've looked at a price of a new rear deralier and its about £60 for the part alone........its the Deore XT........

No, just annoying
Check it is the mech and not just the hanger (quite possibly both).
May be worth trying Halfords, they may do it as a goodwill gesture, but it's not warranty.0 -

Thanks mate i'll give them a call, it is so annoying that a bike of that value (ok not as much as some have paid but a lot to me) has ended up doing this, i've had cheaper bikes for years and never had a problem like this.....
Any ideas what could have caused it?My Road Bike:-

Chain breaking is possible, if it happened under load it can drag the mech round as it happened. Stick in the mech is the usual cause, but unlikely to have made it skip before hand.0

Not Warranty mate, you probs bent your hanger causing it to skip and then the skipping finished the job off
Also are you sure your Rear Mech is damaged? Normally just the hanger goes80 x 80 is not enough pixels!!!!

Just replace it with a deore or slx if you wanna keep cost down, weight difference isn't going to affect the bike much either0

Yeah pics would help.
But the hanger would be bolted to the frame then the rear mech bolted to that, they normally have a shear point to save your frame, have a look and see if you can see anything that looks snapped
This pic may help?

Hi Bails and Stunter, thanks for your replies and input mate, i won't be in until about 11 tonight, however i have a really good digital camera so will take some large photos of it tonight and put the photos up on photobucket so you can see and will post the link here.
I would really like to get this bike back on the road (or trail) and don't exactly have large sums of cash available at the moment so any help from you guys to help me get it back on the road myself without having to take it to a shop would be really appreciated. My Road Bike:-

Same thing happened to me, however bike only 2 weeks old. Took it straight back to LBS, new hanger and Mech!
I know this might sound stupid, but it could look worse than it is. See if the mech hanger is bent. It might just be the hanger thats totally screwed.Giant XTC SE 2006
