I have a 2007/2008 GT Avalanche that I am buiding from scratch. Having great fun sourcing components from eBay but am unsure about a couple of sizes, can anyone help...

Seat post size and seat post clamp size
Bottom bracket size, and do I need a particular chain set or are they all compatible

Seatpost 27.2mm, Bottom bracket 68mm but external BB normally do both sizes and clamp is 31.8mm IIRC.

SLX Chainset fitted to mine and a vast improvement on the standard Deore octalink that was fitted.

Try Merlin for the chainset fro £90 and they do SLX front, rear gears plus shifters and cables for around £90
