Guys,
I have a Trek 5000 Triple with a Bontrager Select crankset which is in the process of failing
Now i want to upgrade to at least an ultegra but i am not sure whether to go away from the triple.
The current set up is:
Crankset: Bontrager Select Triple ring
Front deraileur: Ultegra triple
Rear deraileur: Ultegra
Shifters: 105's
The rear cog set up is different to my other bike (assume this is due to the triple ring) it there is a longer gap between the 2 rear cogs (if that makes sense)
Now my question is:
If i want to change to a double ring, what do i need to change?
Obviously the Front deraileur
rear cogs?
chain?
shifters?
Or is it better just to get an Ultegra triple crankset?
cheers and hope all that made some sense

i would say its best to a compact instead of a triple with that you need:
Different front mech shifter which is probs cheaper than buying a triple0 -
2 for compact; probably be OK with existing front mech as can just screw in the smallest stop to limt to a double shift only---and depending on wear of chain and cogs you may need to change those too as a new chainset / very worn chain (if it is) won`t run too well; if changing cogs almost certainly need new chain, unless <500 miles use.0

Shim 105 (5600) LH shifter will work with double/triple.
If you go for a double, I would also suggest compact chainset to give you the range of gearing that you would be used to having on a triple(for hill climbing and whatnot).
To get accurate and reliable shifting you are better off getting a doulbe-specific front mech.
You will need to change the rear cog to one with a wider range. Say 12-27 instead of the 12-25 that usually comes with a triple setup.
Of course the chain will need to be either adjusted, or better still changed.0 -
Thanks guys,
I ended up getting a good deal on an ultegra SL triple crankset with BB.
That way i dont need to swap out any other components.
I am thinking though as the bontrager crankset was not running true, it may have caused some wear and tear on my chain, so ill replace the chain also.
Stupid question, but i assume i need a specific one for a triple?
