Its for a new Ribble winter bike and which groupset do you think is better? If you have one just say which you prefer.

Shimano Tiagra, 9 speed, 12-23

or

Campagnolo Veloce, 10 speed, 12-23 *(Xenon rear gear) £10 more

Thanks

On a winter bike I would not go 11-23, go 12-25 and use a compact chainset as when you are all wrapped up and just trying to keep the wheels turning you will find it easier and be more prone to continue riding through the crap weather.

9 speed versus 10 speed :? Bit of an easy choice there and especially when considering Campag.

I use Shimano on the others. I was going to stick with Shimano, however it will be brand new bike, and my current winter is so crap and old with sora.

One thing to consider is that some of the tools needed for maintenance are different for Campagnolo.

I would choose the Campagnolo though.

(Actually, I would choose Sram Rival for a few euros more but that's not on your list...)

I'd go fixed. Less to clean and go wrong and spinning keeps you warm.

I would of liked to go fixed, but i would be off the back of the chain gang in a few miles.
I would go campag, but I heard the tiagra is much smoother.

I'd choose SRAM Rival too - but I'm guessing that's not an option with Ribble.

New Veloce groupset perfectly fine and more than good enough for a winter bike. Certainly no problems with smoothness.

in my experience, Campag gets smoother with use as things bed in.
The 10 speed 12-25 will come with a 16 cog, which is a very useful cruisng ratio absent in 9 speed cassettes.

Apart from the cassette lockring tool the tools are the same.

I've got old 8 spped Shimano Sora on mine, its done 5000 miles in all weathers, does not get cleaned that often and all I have had to replace is 1 chain and a frayed cable, just keeps going.

  • Campag, purely on the old saying shimano wears out campag wears in and on a winter bike you want realiablity.

Whichever you prefer the levers for, I've been using tiagra for 5000 miles and I haven't even bothered to replace the chain yet, so it reliable enough. I'll wait until it's proper knackered and get a new cassette too.

    Campag is sexier though.

I would go campag if I had the choice as I have never used it!

I had a similiar experience with Sora.
