Am looking to go to University of East Anglia but was wondering if there was any decent Mtb nearby , as in night ride teritory and for day trips

I know about Thetford but is there anything else?

Was also wondering if any members of the Student Mtb club are on here?

Quite a few bridleways near Brandon/RAF Lakenheath way (west of Thetford Forest) which are ok, some routes around Swaffam too.

Couple coastal routes, Kelling heath and Bacton Woods.

Theres the Marriots Way which starts at the trainstation in Norwich I think and runs round to Aylsham but its all pretty flat easy riding stuff.

Overall nothing fantastic, mostly flat easy paths which is why I travel to the Peaks/Wales a lot ;)

You can always try some unofficial "Off Piste" through Mousehold Heath.

    Certainly NOT flat there.

    Quality
The halls of residence do not allow bikes inside rooms
they have to be left outside
Balls to that tho - what are there rules on bike 'parts' ie a frame + all other things and 2 seperate wheels

certainly not flat as i smashed my hip in mousehold landing bad after a 6ft drop! Mousehold is fun but its full of dog shit! But it is also all we have in Norwich so it is what it is!
Don't do 6ft drops on a carbon full suss trail bike, it doesn't work. Ask my fractured Great Trochanter, he will tell you.
  • mousehold is good, beacuse its free, but just stay off the pitch and putt, they dont like us bikers on there. theres some good built jumps opposite zaxs, or on the otherside of the road (same side as zaxs) there is some good fun singletrack to muck around on,

And if u want a quite flat route, but which is an 18 mile round trip, so good for training, the bure valley railway, which you cans tart from wroxham station, or aylsham station, is 9 miles each way and there is free parking at the wroxham end

Valid points there, however the police told me it is more protected on Zaks side ( which is where I broke my hip ). The By-law still exists banning cycling from Mousehold but it belongs to the people of Norwich so in theory we should be able to do what we like with it. Coincidently, my mates and I want to build some trails on the Zaks side - be good to get the backing of the council but not sure if that will happen, which would be a shame.

There is also a small bit of hilly woodland at Costessey a few miles out of Norwich, and of course Marriotts Way as mentioned above which we did last year from Norwich all the way round to Wroxham for beer and then struggled back to Norwich. Plenty to keep ou busy anyway, we never get too fed up with it anyway.

    Happy riding.

  • thats bad luck with the police on mousehold, ive been mucking around on there for a while now and never had problems. i tend to just stop when i see a family or dog walker, cause its just alot easier than rubbing people up the wrong way, its good fun, im quite excited to get back to mousehold for some spring riding, last time i managed to get out the ground was frozen and was pretty damm hard work to get anywhere.

It was only by chance that a copper was walking through Mousehold the day I came off, but he did help me and I can't complain. Agree with you about the spring riding, will probably see you about sometime! I'll be the one moaning about my hip aching......
