There are few (if any) that can touch the Boardman Comp on spec at the price.
*waits for the avalanche to say different*

It's a damned fine bike at the price - I have the '08 and am really pleased with it. :D
...you would have to pay a few hundred more to get the equivalent spec from another manufacturer (unless there's a good offer on somewhere in your size).

It is a well specced bike but the "Tiagra / 105 mix" is stretching it a bit. The brakes are Tektro, the chainset isn't Shimano and only the rear mech is actually 105. Wiggle have some Focus Variado Experts on sale with 105 drive train for less but are restricted to 50 and 52cm. That said, at standard price you will be hard pressed to find a better specced bike for the money.

I've got an 08 one, it's a good bike for the cash ( I only paid £450 :D ) But like skydog says there are a few bits that need attention soon chainset isn't great brakes are aparently not the best, I haven't changed mine though, and the wheels aren't very well sealed. Nothing that won't last at least a year of normal use though, I did nearly 5000 miles on mine last year in all weathers and have only replaced the wheels because the rear hub and freehub died at the same time. Other than that it hasn't skipped a beat.

Edit sorry Pross not skydog, I need to pay more attention.

  • I have one too. an 09 model.
I dont think it can be matched for price anywhere. or by anything else.

the brakes are tektro, but they may not be awesome, i think they work bloody well. with a good set up and better quality pads.
wheels could do with upgrading, but that could be said about most bikes at this price range.

chainset isn't the best, but i think looks alot more expensive than it actually is, and in separate reviews, it does score quite highly, maybe the bike can achieve more than it currently offers. which is nice to know upgrades are worth it.

sram chainsets seem to be more rigid than shimano. the higher end stuff is the most rigid out there.

Yeah, It's not actually a shimano chainset. Its a truvativ elita http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/components/chainset/product/elita-gxp-compact-chainset-10182 of course its budget equipment. i think it looks far better than shimano stuff. and i believe truvativ are owned by sram.

yes they are owned by sram. i know the boardman doesnt have shimano chainset, i was just saying as a comparison dont judge everything buy its price.the set you have is fine. if you spend hundreds more you might save 200g.

I had one of these and thought it was great. I couldn't find a comparable bike at the same spec. Had no problems at all with mine, brakes or chainset, although I did upgrade the wheels straight away. I think any bike at this price point would stand an immediate wheel upgrade though.
  • You wont find a current bike for the same spec, yea you'll find maybe a last year model bike for £100 cheaper or more but it won't be a current bike. The problem with them is when they were first brought in there was so much excitment about them that over the past year they have had a lot of quality issues with them i.e brand new bikes with paint flaking off etc, so for the money amazing just make sure you get a GOOD one from a GOOD halfords.

I will have a medium '09 Comp with fewer than 200 dry miles* on it for sale when I collect my Team Limited on Saturday. Even the cables don't need adjusting yet it has had so little use. Absolutely perfect in every way. Includes M520 SPD pedals too.

Looking for around £500, and I am in Bournemouth.
    PM me if you're interested.

    Daniel.

The only real upgrade I've made on my '08 Boardman Comp is the brakeblocks to Koolstops - a real improvement!

I will probably upgrade the wheels eventually (with a set of Paul Hewitt handbuilts), but the next upgrade is tyres sometime in the Spring/Summer.

In the meanwhile, I just have to get my legs working better! The bike is easily better than my legs at present!!!
