Is Cycling in Snow better than the Turbo?

Is Cycling in Snow better than the Turbo? Cycled to work this morning (have been for the last 3 weeks), cycling in 2 to 3 inches of snow into a head wind was bloody hard! 48 mins of a bloody good work out, going up even the slightest high I was in the little chainring (a rarity for me) as getting out the saddle lost all traction. If it keeps up like this I'll either become strong as f*ck or heart attack. :)

Poking your eyes out with an icicle is better than riding on a turbo so on that basis, yes!

That would explain why you aren't arsed about getting to work. Ask yer dad.

Not to mention the poor spelling and grammar.

Mind you with schools closing if someone spits on the ground, it's hardly your fault fella!

This isn't the commuting forum for a start...

The forum rules apply to the whole forum. As I said, type properly or don't bother, even in the mountain bike section.

Actually, that's probably the best reason for writing properly...
Badly written stuff takes more effort to read (sometimes much more), and you're in a forum; at least 10 people will read your message [a guess]. You're forcing 10 people to think and decode because you -- all 1 of you -- couldn't be bothered to even type/spell in the first place.

Unless what you've got to say is so frighteningly unimportant that it shouldn't have been posted in the first place, you'll probably get a better response by at least making an effort...
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

I've never tried a turbo trainer, but just nipped out in my lunch hour. Flippin' heck, that was hard... Really good fun, but I should put a knobbly tyre on the back too -- I was wheel-spinning all over the shop!

WTF is a greey :? ? Making the effort to get your spelling and grammar right now will serve you well later on in life.

In reply to the OP almost anything involving a bike is better than a turbo.

Geez! can't believe the route my post took! Anyway journey home from work was bloody harder than journey in, due to the 2 further inches of snow and being a bit knackered from this Morning. It's on me MTB and the number of times I had to put a foot down on the deepest section was a lot. Really the small chain ring most of way home. Question is should I try to cycle again tommorrow, will I be able to? :)

Why not try using the bike on the turbo?
Making a cup of coffee is like making love to a beautiful woman. It's got to be hot. You've got to take your time. You've got to stir... gently and firmly. You've got to grind your beans until they squeak.
And then you put in the milk.

It's a thing called 'humour'. But you already realised that.

I've just been out in the snow! :D
I took my old (rigid) MTB & lowered the tyre pressures down to 25 front, 30 rear - in hindsight I could've gone 5 psi lower in each. Anyhow, I set off in search of some virgin snow & headed down some backroads & farmtracks.
...unfortunately I found that there was very little virgin snow - most had already been tramped-down by tractors and 4x4's.
    ...and then re-frozen.
...so the surface was a minefield of frozen tractor tracks, ice, semi-compressed snow and slush! ...but it was great to get out of the house & get some fresh air and sunshine. :D
...even though it was minus 3!

Good fun! Not exactly an aerobic workout, but good. :D

...and only one 'off', when I put my foot down when coming to a halt, and my foot kept sliding outwards!

I have riden (road bike) to work for the last two weeks but am thinking of using the car the next few days as it isn't really work the risk. I'm doing 200+ miles a week and one slip - broken collar bone or worse (one of my club broke his hip on ice two weeks back) would make all that base work a waste and set me back for next season.

unless your training for something and desperate to prove a point.

il cycle in the cold but ice is bad kids...
All about the aggregation of marginal gains (or marginal losses, depending on who you are!!)

I don't mind being out in the cold and wet or strong winds but as soon as it gets cold enough to produce ice on the roads that's me off the bike until it warms up a little.

I've been off the bike for over three weeks now

I use the same philosophy just for normal cycling. I don't need to prove a point. I'll just take the car.

Cycled in again today, a bit easier going in as took alternative route mostly on road, with the snow on the road being a bit more flattened down and thus less rutted and front wheel going less sideyways. Came home usual cycle path route which has 5 or so inches of frozen snow on it, again hard going as you tend to "stall" in the slightly deeper sections and difficult to get going again. Getting better and less twitchy on these surfaces though, can't go to fast or to slow while keeping pedalling to maintain forward motion and keeping handlebars pointing forwards. :)
