Would you disassemble a bike before selling it?

I'm planning on selling my Condor bike to fund a new bike and was wondering what the consensus here was about how I should sell it.

Is it generally better to break a bike up in to groupset and frame for the sale or to sell it whole? Your reasons as to the better option would be appreciated.

Thanks

Depends on the quality of the frame and components. If it was an entry-level bike with standard groupset, probably not but if you have spent extra on upgrades, might we worth trying to release the extra value. Likwise, with high-end bikes, people are happy to buy used parts as upgrades but there's less call for a used Sora rear mech.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

looking from a different view, I always break bikes because I find people tend to be pain in the arses when buying complete bikes complaining about stupid things
  • Well as a general rule you get more for splitting bikes down but i did this recently on ebay and didnt get what i wanted for it so i guess it depends, and mine was a ti frame and full ultegra groupset. The problem that i found was that people like chain reaction online doing everything so cheap i was putting my target price a lot lower that i wanted because people could buy it off there brand new for the same cost as mine second hand. Hope that helps.

I agree. I'm breaking down a bike at the moment. I've sold the forks and front hub for slightly more then I thought I'd get (on ebay). I'm still unsure whether to sell the XT chainset, FD, RD and cassette as they might be useful as backups to a new bike.

With complete bikes, you'll get someone say "I don't like the stem, can you give a discount?" Yahhh!

Better than that , I fitted all new cables on a bike I sold. Got moaning and groaning a couple of weeks later regarding the gears.... Hmmmm maybe the new cables have stretched??

or 12% wear on a brake rotor .... that was a classic!!
  • Many thanks guys.

It's seems the consensus here is identical to another site where I raised the same question.

Given what you've all suggested, I think I will sell the bike in bits once the weather improves.

Monty Dog, I'd be selling a Centaur groupset with thecarbon cranks so hopefully someone will be interested at the time. The frame is a 2006 Condor Leggero bought in Feb 2008.

Daj, I feel for you mate. Bet you won't be changing cables ever again if you sell another bike.
