I took part in, amongst others the Radar Ride, Ullapool, Skye, Drumlanrig sportives last year. With the exception of Drumlanrig I cant see where the money goes?

Im not ranting. Just canvassing opinion. I've spoken to club mates who have said 'why pay the fee?' Just turn up and ride the route.' That's not for me though. Never having done any sportives in the south I wondered if the fees are the same.

£35 for half a tracker bar and a couple of water refills? You even have to pay for a photo! Am I expecting too much?

Have a look at the Audax UK calendar -

Plenty of rides there at much more modest rates. Events generally lack the pzazz and the large fields that you find in sportives, but that has its advantages. Routes are generally well-researched by local organisers, and include café or other refreshment stops.
