turbo trainer use with a MTB

anyone tell me is Tacx VR subtable to use a rigid MTB I am not a roadie so dont own a road bike but have a old MTB that can use will it work with a modified tyre and will the gearing be an issue with the vr climbs or will it just mean i am at a disadvantage as opposed to using a road bike the trainer is expensive so dont want the expense of buying a road bike also i apreciate the ride possition is diferent will this be an issue the trainer seems to be designed for a roadie
