pedal choice question

I have some moderate bother with my left knee, caused by a tear in the medial meniscus.
It is manageable on the bike, only really bothering me in the first few miles of a ride. It causes more problems with walking etc. However, it will inevitably get worse with time, and I would like to be kind to it to avoid surgery as long as possible.

Most of my riding is club stuff on the road. I have ridden for years with old style Look pedals and red cleats, but have noticed that my knee gives much less bother when I ride my mountain bike, which has SPDs, or my fixed wheel commuting bike, which has platform pedals. This has set me wondering whether I might find a more knee-friendly road pedal. Any thoughts on this?
cheers

Put SPDs on your road bike.

Either that, or get some new-style Look pedals (and get the NEW red cleats - which have 9 degrees of float.) That should sort out any knee problems.

I don't think the old (Delta) look cleats had float built in.

    Red delta cleats have float.

    Black delta cleats do not.

Red keo cleats have lots of float.

Grey keo cleats have a bit of float.

Check out Speedplay Zero pedals - famed for their stacks of float which you can adjust to suit your requirements.

They have helped me out with my dodgy knees over the last couple of years and feel just as secure as the SPD / Look optionsI have also used.
  • Speedplay sounds like an interesting option. How are the cleats when off the bike?
SPDs are not good in this respect. Look delta are OK.

I had some knee pain with old Looks/Red Cleats. Switched to Time pedals and my knee doesn't bother me any more.
