I'm doing the JoGLE this year after completing LEJoG in 2008. But I remember clearly the strife I had in getting through the NW area from south of Warrington to Lancaster. It was, by a long chalk, the worst part of the whole ride with busy roads and frankly dodgy driving.

If you're familier with the area, I'd appreciate any advice on the best routing.

Thanx,

It does seem to be the bit of the ride which is unavoidably unpleasent (unless you take a long Eastern detour). I went over the Runcorn bridge and through Widnes and St. Helens which, although not particularly lovely, wasn't too bad. It wasn't especially busy (early afternoon) and only took an hour or so. Once we got to Billinge it was all nice again.
