I've stayed there in winter and it wasn't just cool it was freezing. It's OK. Small French town/big village. Not very exciting. Worth considering - but you might also want to look at Séez.0

Bourg St Maurice is okay Seez is more attractive and both well placed for the climbs you want to do. If I can find my receipt I'll post the hotel where I stayed in B st M which was okay but about the least expensive.. St Bernard is a really nice climb : a steady and not too steep gradient and nice views. coll de l'Iseran is 30 miles away and up to Tignes is a bit uninteresting but gets much prettier (and harder) from there. You can do cormet de roseland and a couple of other climbs to ski resorts are nearby.
I personally like st Jean de Maurienne in the next valley down. Hotels are more reasonably priced and the col de la Madeleine, "lacets de montvernier" (google them)/ col du Chaussy, Col de la Croix de fer (best via the col du Mollard and its 40 odd hairpins), cols du telegraphe/ galibier by the classic and much better north side are all nearby. Plus St j de Maurienne is on rail line so take a local train (no need to book) 20 miles east to Modane and you can do col du Mont Cenis and the col de l'Iseran from the south side.0 -
In Bourg st Maurice the cheapest hotel I found was Hotel Arolla. pretty basic but ok. I found another cheap hotel on a google search but it was closed when I wanted to go.
Forgot to mention that the col du Glandon is also close to st Jean de Maurienne. If you decide to stay there, the Hotel d'Europe is owned by a cycle fan and is good value and comfortable. Also The Hotel Bernard was a bargain when I stayed in 2008 comfortable and a rustic well cooked meal.0
