Took the bottom bracket out of my Santa Cruz Blur the other way and on the outside of the centre guide it was swimming in muddy water. Now this can only be getting in via the seat tube and i was wondering if anyone has any good ideas how to prevent it?

can get in from many places.

seat tube. head tube. water bottle mounts, weld blow holes.

remove seat post and turn bike upside down. and let dry.

and grease the joins on the spacer to keep the water out of the bearings.

  • Yup i whipped some grease around the spacer to precent it entering the bearings. It was like half a sand bank surrounding it!
  • Some frames have a small hole in the bottom bracket shell don't they?

I use a piece of old inner tube around seatpost and held in place by clamp to prevent ingress of dirt and water during this lovely mild and dry season!

My Kona typically ends up with half a glass of water in the frame after a wet ride.

In fact I habitually remove the seatpost and flip the bike to let it drain out.

Does not seem to be a big problem!
