My Pearson's free wheel has finally called it a day and as I return to London later this month I am going to send it in for servicing.
Big question is what are the SS crowd running? The bike is currently on the stock 48/18 but this is now far far too spinny at speed (think road runner leg speeds) so I am going to up the ratio. I am thinking 48/16 should be fine and considered going even higher, but as my new commute will finish at the top of highgate hill and I quite often do longer rides in the Surrey hills on it, I dont want to harm the climbing ability...
Any thoughts/MTFU comments gratefully received.

Until recently I'd been getting myself up to Highgate on 48:17 (using 46:17 over the winter), usually via Swain's or West Hill. I wouldn't have wanted to do either of those regularly on any higher gearing, but you should be ok with 48:16 up Highgate Hill.0

Think i will go with 48x16 in that case, as i am happy to grind up the hill on the way home in exchange for a super quick ride into work in the mornings!http://www.ledomestiquetours.co.uk
