Sidi MTB vs. Road shoes

Hi all, I've been hankering after a pair of Sidi cycling shoes for a good few months now and there seems to be some good deals out there in the January sales

I've recently gotten into road cycling having been MTBing for a few years and hence I ride my road bike with MTB shoes (I know this may be frowned upon by some).

So what's the main reason I'd be better off getting specific road shoes rather than using MTB shoes on my road bike. If I buy the MTB shoes (Dragons) then clearly I get the benefit of being able to use 1 pair of shoes on 2 bikes.

The cleats looks bigger on road shoes so does this provide more comfort and/or efficency?

If I do go for a road specific shoe is it worth selling out £158 for the Genius 6.6 over the Genius 5 Pro at £124, or going the whole hog and getting Ergo 2's for £168

I then have to factor in the cost of road specific pedals - without breaking the bank what do people recommend?

Any & all advice most welcome.

Road shoes are stiffer as you don't need to get off and walk/run in them - it depends how long and how serious you are about road cycling really ? For better efficiency and comfort - get a stiff carbon road shoe and pedals to match.
Personally I use looks and carbon road shoes in summer and racing, and my winter bike has time atac and mtb shoes as they are warmer and great for walking at cake stops.

You can do good distances in mtb shoes -youll lose a bit of power and you may be able to feel the pedal below you - but that's about it.

As to the sidis - try them for comfort first - I find them a bit narrow and overpriced - I wear specialized shoes now. Very comfy and under a ton.

If you getting expensive shoes, MTB shoes are as stiff as road shoes. In some brands they are the same shoe, just with different drillings and a stuck on sole.
"Road = stiffer" is only valid at the cheap end of the market.
Similarly, comments about hot foot and feeling the pressure from a small pedal don't apply to top of the range MTB shoes.

    for MTB shoes:
    a) You can walk properly
    b) The bigger cleat gives a more stable platform. The smallness of the cleat means that the shoe isn't held as solidly and can rock about a bit.
    c) The sole tread is a little extra weight.

    I use decent MTB shoes
    I want (a), put up with (b) and don't care about (c)
