Slice a King crownrace into a 'C' race?

Can I cut a Chris King nothreadset crown race into a split race so that I can remove it easily? I want to share forks but can't afford a king for the other frame (the king came with the new frame).

Advisable?

I wouldn't - it may distort it and unevenly load the bearings.

even if it is only a single cut with a fine junior hacksaw blade? The gap should be barely 1mm across... just the width of the blade...

i would not as they are a bugger to get right as it is.

should have got a better headset if you wanted user niceness.

hmm maybe, I wouldn't buy a king headset normally - it came with the frame; An Ellsworth Moment with a push tuned RP3 + headset and postage and packaging for...

I wasn't going to turn him down for the irritating headset

Knock the King out, sell it, but another coppy of the headset on your other bike, problem solved (probably with a profit too)

just buy another King crown race about £10-15 depending on where you get it

then you can fit it to your other forks and have both forks setup with king race

I think he means he has 2 frames and wants to swap forks around quite frequently, But cant afford another CK headset

Nah, bceause the other frame doesn't have a King.

If you really can't afford another King headset (they're not that much from Aspire Velotech or on eBay) then sell it, they tend to go for good money.

They're made to incredibly tight tolerances, so 'just 1mm' is likely to totally bugger it!
