Up for a new ride, put in 18 months on my rocky ridge and now feel the need (aching back) to through a leg over a FS.
Love the look of the ST4 over the five but love the balls of the five and then there's the Commencal meta 5 that keeps saying buy me.
Whos tested any or all of these bikes, will try to pop over for an Orange demo day soonish but would like some feedback beforehand.
Thanks

What is your budget, and what sort of bike are you after?

I have had an '06 Orange 5 & currently have an '08 Orange 5, my mate has a Meta 553

We have swapped bikes quite a few times on rides

Both bikes are very good, but unsurprisingly we both prefer our own bikes

I love the way the Orange 5 descends & flies along singletrack, whilst being no slouch uphill & it is seriously bombproof

The Meta (to me) felt a little flexy at the back, but climbs a bit better than the Orange 5, it's good on singletrack but not quite as good on the descents

As for the ST4, I need to try one myself to comment (although the owners I do know love it)

    Thanks Andy.
Super, I'd be looking at the pro model in the Orange lineup of either bike, can't buy a bike without a Fox fork.

Testing is the way forward then. But so many full sussers out there.

If after a fast, tough 4 inch susser, I'd take a look at the Mongoose Canaan Team:

Has the top Fox fork, and a spec that nothing else can match for the money. Also highly reviewed, and the Freedrive system pedals vey well.

Thanks Super, not really a mongoose fan even though my first ever MTB was a Mongoose Newman, am getting a bit antsy to get on over to GB for a bit of a look see and a ride though, been a while between drinks.

Sorry, but that is not true. One broken frame doesn't mean a thing, especially when you don't know how it happened.

I have seen many many broken Oranges over the years. In fact I have seen most makes with bust bikes.

yer i know but mongoose is not the same caliber of bike as the orange and a lot of people say oranges have good build quality and there hand-build but we used to have a mongoose factor where i live and all there bikes seemed to be cheap and tacky

    Sorry, you are talking rubbish.

GT and Mongoose are owned by the same people... made in the same factory using the same machines. And very high quality ones at that. Your Avalanche is made to the same standard as Mongoose frames.

I test rode both the 09 orange 5 pro and the meta 5.5.2 and even though it's said to have a slightly flexy rear end on the meta I didn't notice it, and I'm 17 stone! The orange 5 to me didn't seem as sturdy and to be honest the 5 s basic model is 2k, I got the 09 meta for £1400 from evans..
