Why not race - Armstrong's only 38 and there's a couple of pro near your age (Jens Voigt).

If you enjoy it - do it. Who cares how old you are.

    Go for it! :D

Try it for a season - see if you enjoy it or not. Worse case, if you don't enjoy it, it will have given you some targets and improved your fitness, experience and ability.

  • Bunches have been getting older ever since I've been racing anyway. Have a go and enjoy yourself.

When it's no longer fun, or too painful, or lost the whatever it was that got you started, then that is the point at which you should stop.

You're only 42, I know riders approaching 50 who can win club races. It's not your age but what you want to achieve and how much you put into your training that matters. If it's something you want to do then go for it.

Where's the option to grow old gracefully and race?

I can't believe someone aged 42 is asking this question. Perhaps you should buy yourself a rug to put over your knees and start to enquire about meals on wheels?

Or you could get off your backside and get on with it like dozens of people I know in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

Look up the LVRC and see if you can keep up with the 60+ year olds in a road race - I bet 75% of the people under 40 on this forum couldn't. Those guys are very fit and very fast.

Go and ask Malcolm Elliott, he's approaching 50 and still racing with the young pro's.

Hmm. Apparently Chrissy Wellington had something like a dozen offers of marriage after winning in Hawaii in October. You are the only offer I've had after my appearance in CW. Don't suppose you look like Jonny Lee Miller do you? No, I thought not. :(

Haha! Just look for a dimming of the sky.

Back to the OP. I'm 46 and I'll be looking to start racing this year(Lotus Cars series) and do my first triathlons as well as the various TT's and stuff. I'm by no means fast but i'll give it a go just for the enjoyment and the challenge.
