Want to remove the bearings from Shimano BB cups and replace with new bearings. Spotted this tool on Chain Reaction it says it is compatible with Shimano

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=40434

Has anyone used it with Shimano cups and was it any good. I have collection of dead Shimano BB cups and I reckon if I buy this tool and a pile of decent quality bearings I will never need to buy a new BB

There's an article on how to use this tool on the raceface bb's in this months MBR magazine. I'm sure it says something about using it with shimano bb's but cant remember exaclty what it said and was a mates magazine i was reading. Maybe worth going to a shop and having a quick flick through it.

Thanks for that I went to our local WHSmiths magazine reading library and had a look at that article. They seem to have had no problems using it on a Shimano apart from the plastic sleeve installation. The Raceface parts not fitting which isnt a surprise.

I have some xmas cash to splash so I have bought one plus 10 new bearings should keep me going for the next few years :)

Bearing tool finally arrived wednesday (thanks postie)

Just fitted some shiny new spinny bearings. Piece of wee only took about 20 minutes to do both cups. I now have cranks that spin smoothly and dont feel like a cheap ratchet wrench.

Tool is a thing of beauty built like a battleship

Absolutely no reason they shouldn't work together - and a bit of checking with my mate who works for a major bearing supplier confirms nearly all external BBs use a standard 61805 (sometimes called 6805) 37x25x7mm bearing. Yes it will cost you £15 for an upgrade/replacement kit from your LBS but a quick trip to a bearing supplier (usually one in a major town/industrial area) will net you the same bearing (usually higher quality from the likes of SKF or INO) for about £2 a pop, or you can jump to ceramic at about £15 or so. Just don't get the "full ceramic" type as they are a bit prone to impact damage......

  • delcol or stu47t you don't happen to have the issue do you? if so do you think you could scan the article.

If not don't worry but thanks any way.
