My Dad is a roadie and is positive that road riding is much more enjoyable than mountain biking i told him he is wrong. He decided that we should have a competition on who could do the most miles in 2010. Last year he got around 1400 so I , being intent on winning, need a way to get y miles up fast.

1400 Miles is not that much to clock up over a year.
1400/52= 26.9 miles a week. so ride 3 times a week on a 10 mile loop (depending on terrain but in my area for me under 1hour.) and you should thrash your dads last year total.Nothing in life can not be improved with either monkeys, pirates or ninjas

Its not really a fair test though is it...as "enjoyable" is subjective and not quantifiable.
I do both mountain and road biking and I enjoy both...but I think nothing of going and doing 50 miles on the road bike where as that distance would be a major ride off road.... mile for mile road biking is easier than mountain biking.
If he wants to beat you on miles he will, and easily0 -
I hope you put into this bet that a mile off road is worth two miles on road and at the moment probably closer to three or four in the mud.
Still 1,400 miles off road is not a big ask for a years riding, 27 miles per week.
Just set yourself a target you are comfortable with and as the weather improves and the going gets easier rack it up.
Even in the slow going off road conditions we have at the moment I've done more than 27 miles in the last week and I'm only a few months off my 60th birthday.
You're probably still a young whipper-snapper so get out and do it.Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"0 -
How mean is your dad to propose such a challenge!
He'll easily out do your mileage on the road, unless he's a lazy git and doesn't ride that often!http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss9/ ... lurLT2.jpg

its not just about the amount of miles you do but the amount of smiles you get from riding! i have done both road and now mtb and bombing through the forest is alot more fun. Dont let numbers get in the way of enjoyment. FoD rocks!!!!!Orange G30

So we're starting from the position that all your miles have to be off-road? Or can you rack up the miles as long as your on the MTB? I used to ride my MTB everywhere - work, shops, friends' houses, etc - and coupled with weekend and evening rides and MTBing holidays I racked up around 15000 miles a year.0
