Have a holiday next for first couple of weeks of May. Would really love to go XC mountain biking in USA ..somewhere where there are many long (50km+) routes as Ive road bike races to come back for in June. Somewhere not totally covered in spring snow obviously...

Any ideas? Never been to that part of US and struggling to google anything other than technical trails in Moab etc.
Thanks

I did Thunder Mountain near Bryce Canyon at the end of September, not as far as you are looking to do but it is off road and at altitude and could be (was) hot so it is a good work out and it is spectacular.

Don't rent a bike at nearby Rubys Inn, the one I got was wrecked.

Also done Gooseberry Mesa near Zion NP, excellent, again not 50Km the way I did it. Bikes available in Springdale.

In California there are loads of trails on Mammoth mountain and around the Lake Tahoe area but the snow will probably not be gone from the high ground in May.

The road riding in Utah looks pretty good btw.

For Utah, have a look at

Also worth a look, this guys site, he's done loads of trails:
