I have both and either works just fine! On balance, my preference is for tights because it's more economical to sink your money into a good set of bib shorts and ride them year round than on bib tights that you only wear in the cold. There are plenty of cheap(ish) tights without a chamois that will get the job done for far less overall than a specialised set of bib tights. Now, I live in Chicago and I have to confess that there are days here that I wear a pair of tights over a set of bib tights! Not a problem you have to deal with, fortunately!!![/i]0

I always prefer tights without pads to wear over a good pair of cycling shorts. Wash the shorts after each ride but don't always need to wash the tights.
There are plenty of very good winter tights without pads - I use the Assos air protect tights but there are some good cheaper alternatives.0 -

Gonna sound stupid but... I have stupidly short legs - found that a pair of size 14 3/4 length LADIES (I know, I know...) leggings over my cycling gear works really well in the cold. Keeps my nice cycling stuff clean as well, if a dirty day.0

ta for responses everyone, will stick to buying decent bib shorts and buy some decent tights i think.
all the best for year aheadnever hurts your eyes to look on the bright side of life...0 -
You can of course get bib tights which come without padding - IMO wear these over a decent pair of bib shorts for the best overall winter compromise.

+1, tights without pad worn over Bib shorts works for me.I ache, therefore I am.0

IME lycra has very poor thermal properties and after prolonged use in the cold, it tend to trap moisture and chill you - if you want to stay warm, get a pair of quality undershorts like Montane and use them under unpadded tights.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

thanks for all replies/opinions everyone, whilst the snow is melting i will make my choice between the tights or bibtights both unpadded to go with my bibshorts underneath i think.
suppose with the tights if you found you were warming too much they would be easier to whip off? but the bibs are more comfortable..
