XT front mech query

Another XT mech related question, I've just got the newest XT front mech and I might be being a bit thick, I've got the 31.8 mech and it's a Kona caldera which measures 31.8, should there be a gap where the clamp goes round the frame, ie where it does up the two sides of the clamp aren't flush with each other,is that right? just don't want to do it up and crush the frame!
