ultegra 6700 shifter compatibility questions..

I have some new ultegra 6700 stis which I was intending to pair up with an ultegra sl front mech (the dark grey one) however I have just read somewhere that 6700 shifters can only be used with 6700 mechs as the cable pulled by the shifters is different. Is this correct?
Also that the distance between the chainrings is different on the 6700 crankset for the same reason... and as such wont work with the fsa crankset i've bought..
Or is this all a load of rubbish?

Not sure about cable pull for the gears, but there is a difference in the brake cable pull ratio, it's the same as DA.
Fear not, a really smart person will be along, soon, with all the requested info...Start with a budget, finish with a mortgage!0 -
Does that mean that you can only use shimano calipers then? cos I've just got some of the ultralight ones from planet x - :roll:0

Ravey,
From a few posts over on Weight Weenies they do seem to be backwards compatible. Have a read through on this link:

They better be because I've got a pair coming next week :shock:0 -
No probs with what you want to do. The shifters do indeed move the front mech slightly further (the 6700 chainset has the sprockets 1mm further apart), but it doesn`t seem to matter much when you get it set up correctly, just gives you a fraction more movement between H and L screws, allows a touch of "trim".
Calipers work OK with the brake levers as well, the 6700 levers pull a bit more cable due to the pivot position, with a standard set of calipers you get a bit less travel at the caliper, as you`re moving more cable, so the brakes feel a touch "hard" but mine work fine like this, never had any moments where the brakes didn`t feel OKJens says "Shut up legs !!
