I'm after a new bike, something that I could potentially stick tri bars on, do road races on and sportives.

I could buy a new Cayo 105, or spend the cash on something of a higher spec second hand. As it is, the Cayo at £825 is a similar price of better brand bikes, of similarish spec.

So question really is, would I be better off on new 105 Cayo, or something like a used 105 spec Spesh Tarmac Comp?

I potentially have the option on the C2W scheme, but its going to involve me setting up, and administering it for the whole company, which could turn into a bit of a nightmare. But thats another topic really!

I suppose another valid question, given the fact I'm a bit of a magpie for new stuff, is that will either of these options be much better (lighter, faster, nicer) than my Giant SCR 1.0 that I would continue to use for training and commuting?

Thanks.

    Thanks for the overwhelming response.

I've just bought a used Spesh Tarmac Comp :D
  • To be fair to people on here, I think this type of thing is down to personal choice. I think it's a question of whether you're prepared to take the gamble with ebay or would prefer to place safe with Wiggle. Looking at the bike you got, it seems like you got a good deal providing the seller is being honest.

I see what you mean with the overwhelming response, it's almost as if people are off doing something else on the 25th/ 26th of December. Is there anything going on at the moment?

I'd have said a new Planet X Ultegra (admittedly at £100 over budget) or a second hand Cervelo Soloist, with up to Ultegra and Ksyriums for £750 - £800 on eBay (if you had a few months to keep an eye out). I tend to shed a tear when I see them go for that price as I can't justify one to my missus or the bank!

I looked at the Tarmac before I got my Trek - pictures?

[edit] The Soloist/S1 had a reversible seat pin for either 72' or 78' so you could use it for road or TT, but I've heard this is no longer the case on the 2010 model. Anyone know?

I was being sarcastic in jest regarding having no replies!

I guess you've seen the bike I won Edindevon. If he's not being genuine I wont have the cash over when I collect! I appreciate what you say about personal choice, its just nice to have thoughts and decisions confirmed by the masses!

    I'll update when I collect tomorrow![/list]

I as a rule hate second hand stuff (except for cars where I've never had the choice) but in the summer I bought a second hand titanium bike for a steal. I've got to say it's one of the best things I've ever bought. I was expecting the bike to be in bit of a state with the odd thing not quite working right, but it was in perfect condition. I think that the seller was a bit over weight was very re assuring and showed that the bike had hardly be used.

What I'm trying to say is that you've probably made a very wise choice and I wonder with the popularity of sportives and the weekend warrior, will second hand bikes now always be the best route to go down.

I got a ridden once Carbon Spesh Tarmac Comp with a spare new pair of gaitor skins, a cadence computer, some decent look pedals and some tri bars for £670.

Its mint apart from one small scratch from the gear cable.

Wouldn't get a lot for that much new!

Was sold due to a back injury, and the condition really does indicate it was ridden once.

There is obviously a level of risk with second hand buys, but when they work out there are bargains to be had.
