Right then fellas.....

Having finished uni, and got myself a job, it's about time (in line with one of my new year's resolutions) that I 'flew the nest'.

As much as I love saving £500 a month, (and by 'saving' I actually mean spending on bike stuff) I want to get the independence of being at uni back (and by 'independence' I mean spending entire weekends watching smut on the internet!).

So, anywhere nice in Warwickshire? I went to uni in Coventry, got a couple of mates there, and I work in Warwick. Or I could stay around Birmingham, but I don't want to start sounding like a brummie!

Alternatively, give me some 'wildcard' options, so somewhere with proper mountains!

Or I could go live with 4XJ on the IoW........ I'm sure I could earn good money as his carer!

to be fair, 5 minutes in 4XJ's company and i'd probably put a hole in his head.

All the best with your search for a "batchelo" pad

Isn't Stratford in warwickshire? i was there once, a really nice piece of england if memory serves me well.

Renting is a waste of money IMO, your better of staying at home for a while (enjoy the cooking and washing service), save up money for a deposit, then buy a flat or small house, then rent one of the other rooms out to pay for the mortgage.

Renting you are throwing money away and you stll have to pay bills and council tax.

Yeah, it is nice. Very close to rural areas too. (Oddly enough, I can see into someone's flat from my office window, they've got an exercise bike. I can also see the miles of rolling countryside around Warwick/Leamington, and I can't help but feel sorry for them for not having a proper bike!) Although being so South would take me further away from Cannock Chase!

I'm seriously looking at places and saying "2nd floor, I'm not lugging my bike up all those steps, no way!"

I found a house in a not too nice part of Coventry, for the same price as a flat somewhere nicer (or half a flat in Solihull, which is depressingly expensive). The one redeeming feature was the garden, with slabs, leading through double patio doors into the laminate floored lounge. Perfect for bike wahsing/maintainance!

I'm hoping for a 'double-dip' recession, my job should be safe, and houses might be cheaper! I might just get someone called Chardonnay pregnant and live in a council flat, seems like the easy option.

Yeah, I think I'll do that. Maybe not renting another room, but try to go for a mortgage. I've got some savings and my parents have basicaly said I can have my inheritance now, rather than when they die, as it'll be more useful to me now as a deposit!

I just wondered if there's any other young'uns, and what they pay. The only reference points I've got are mates who've moved to London, so are getting shafted, and a stupidly clever mate who earns substantially more than me, so isn't really much use as a comparison.

In derby which is a pretty average midlands area, we used to pay about £500 for a 2/3 bed terraced house in the centre of the city, great for while you are still young enough to enjoy it. That was a year ago now, and I now own a 2 bed terraced house in the centre of the city.

Where I come from (just up the road from Rugeley) It should be ALOT cheaper than that, and house prices are dirt cheap in comparison too. But you would have to put up with the concentration of chavs
  • move up north... the riding is better...

    Happy? :P

'Tis true. I was once offered ownership of the entire town when I accidentally pulled out a 20 in Tesco.

How about a posh motorhome type thingy for a while while using inlaws as a postal drop off only (washing and longer stays as needed ) then you could have the benefits of no council tax and a different riding venue as and when required. :D:D
I'm going to blow the bank on a new build ( within reason ) NOW DONE!!

Come live in Scotland. Aywhere apart from Glasgow will do. We have mountains, we have good weather (for about 4 days) and we get snow which is fun to ride in.

Plus we have lots and lots of Whisky!

  • If you fancy living in Leeds, I have a spare bedroom. Split the rent 50/50 and then add on the council tax and you'll be paying roughly £260 a month. An hour from the peninnes, an hour from the Peaks, an hour from North York Moors and only a couple of hours from Scotsland and Wales.
Plus, you'd give me an excuse to clear all the crap out of my house

  • There's some big department for the NHS in Leeds or nearby anyway. 2 people I ride with work for them ;) One of them phones up the government and tells them the statistics that you hear. Not sure where the office is though, but it can't be far from the city centre.
