I have bought my first road bike, a second hand Trek 1000, with Vuelta Airline 2s. I don't want to spend too much on wheels, as this will be purely a commuting bike. I have done some research and am currently thinking about getting a pair of Racing 7s. My question is, will it be a noticeable upgrade? or does anyone have any other recommendations?

cheers

Good starter choice, I have some Campag Vento wheels which are about equivalent to the F7's and while not as stiff as my Zondas, they'd be fine for commuting.

That said, won't your current wheels be fine if you're not intending to do sportives/club rides? The whole point of spending money on faster components is to ride them faster, in situations that call for it. Of course, if you've got a good start (as in you can maintain 15-16mph without difficulty) you'll be ready to do exactly that. So as well as buying the F7's for commuting, have a look at nearby clubs and events to take part in, and enjoy your new wheels even more :D

I've also got campag ventos on one of my bikes but is there really any need to upgrade your wheels for a commuter - or do you just fancy having something this a 'specific' name or brand on it - or in a shiney, newer condition?
  • Thanks for the advice. The reason I was thinking of new wheels was because for not too much money i can have some much nicer wheels, or is it really not worth it for a commuter bike?
