Evening peeps...

I'm in the market for a new chainset.

My BB is making a right noise and the crank arms are starting to wear on the my existing Truvativ Stylo GXP.

I've had a read of various threads and CRC etc etc and come up with a couple of options. I'd be glad of some opinions, pro's and con's etc of the following:

http://www.on-one-shop.co.uk/acatalog/info_CSFSMEKFATB170443222.html
Question - Why is this so cheap? Is it a really old model or something?

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=26944

Set up at the moment is SRAM shifters, front and rear mechs. Any reason why either of the above wouldnt be suitable?

Any thoughts, opinions, alternatives much appreciated. I confess, I'm after a bit of bling  but something that does the job. I assume that they won't come with ceramic BB's which is something I'll look into later on.

If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks in advance :D

Why not XT? Cheaper and lighter than the RaceFace. But that FSA looks good. No reason they won't work with your current set up

    +1 for slx
Rock Lobster 853, Trek 1200 and a very old, tired and loved Apollo Javelin.

+1 for then fsa. the fsa is stiff light and the rings wear well. slx is ok but the rings are rather cheap. xt is great but a tad boring in the looks department.

    Cheers for the replies :)

I do like the FSA, but paranoid about its large reduction in price, am I missing something ?

Will they both come with a decent BB or do you think I should look for a half decent one of those as well? (Hope Ceramic from CRC perhaps).

Also open to other suggestions for chainsets, something with a bit of bling factor that'll look nice on a white frame...

Not missing anything with the FSA one, On One bought a job lot of OEM stock for building bikes, they're obviously surplus to requirements. A friend's bought 3 of the K-Force Light double ones on there, and has no complaints.

Someone on Weight Weenies was complaining that they (the double version) weigh far more than claimed if that's an issue, but I don't know about the triple version.

Ah okay, would they be the 2009 ones then ? There are a couple similar on CRC, but none identical to compare.

In terms of weight I'm more going for the look, so as long as its not heavier than the Truvativ Stylo I already have, I'll be happy.

Hoping its just a remove one and bang the other in job...?

This also assumes this one will actually fit my bike, more research needed me thinks

  • Both of them will be good, failing that you cant go to far wrong with XT/SLX just sometimes nice to have something thats different.
Wow great ship man. Looks like a fish, flies like a fish, steers like a cow.

Why not get a new BB? The Stylo is a good chainset.

supersonic...yes I was thinking that as a short term option perhaps. Any thoughts on the two chainsets I've looked at so far?

The reason for a change was that the grey of the Stylo doesn't really go with the bike (yeah I know, I know  )

Any recommendations for a new BB? You've probably seen from my earlier posts, I was looking at the Hope Ceramic (in Blue :D ) Any good?

The Hope BBs seem to add 50g over say Shimano BBs, but many people report them lasting longer.

The £150 FSA chainset: if the published weight is correct, it is very lardy for the RRP, and still not as light as the SLX! The Raceface is marginally lighter than SLX, but XT is lighter still.

For me it would be Shimano. They seem to have the best blend of weight, price, stiffness and longevity.

Hmmm, perhaps I'll have a look at the XT this evening then, see how it looks.

I like the look of the Raceface and just had the FSA in there for the carbon and what seemed a bargain price.

Now to find out what size my BB is  and scan through CRC to see what I can find XT wise.

Cheers for the replies :D Mucho appreciated

External BBs don't come in 'sizes' for 68 or 73mm shells, you just use the supplied spacers. Though it has to be compatible.
  • I got put off by Raceface cranksets because of poor BB reviews.

    Stick with shimano.
  • It think it has to be XT with shimano BB which seem to last forever, I am sure you will be pleased once fitted. I also believe it looks excellent, unless you’re into colours.

I must confess the last time I took a bottom bracket out was about 10 years ago so I'm sure many things of changed

I need to find out exactly what BB I need and decide if I really want to spend £150 on something (chainset) that I dont actually need
