Brake problems

I'm having a problem with my rear disc brake. It is XTR (975) and is only about 9 months old. I've not had to do anything to the brake since I've had the bike until I had to replace the pads recently.

When changing the pads, one of the piston's came out to far which seemed to introduce loads of air into the system. I took the bike to my LBS for them to bleed it. They have told me that they can't bleed it properly because the seals have gone in the lever and they have said that I will need a new lever as shimano apparently don't just sell the seals.

The lever blade almost comes back to the grip before engaging however if you pump the lever a few times the performance comes back to normal. The problem is that the brake goes back to being rubbish as soon as you stop pumping it.

Any ideas if this can be rectified or if a new lever is on the cards

Thanks for your help.

  • maybe try taking it to another bike shop for a second opinion and to see if they stock seals on ther own

    sounds like a crap shop.

find another shop who knows how to bleed brakes as there is still air in the system.

  • Was the brake working ok before you changed the pads?

Have you done a search to see if seals are available?

    plus....10billion.

It took me fecking ages to get all the air out my saints (i'm talking almost 1/2 a day bleeding, then a ride and then more bleeding)..... but thats because i'd never done it before and i'm never happy unless its perfect.

When I thought the bleeding was complete, i'd put the lever back together squeeze the brake a few times and it'd go back to the lever. After a bit of time and effort, my brakes are not dangerously sharp.

Take the bike somewhere else or DIY.
  • Yeah it was fine before I changed the pads.

Cannot find any shops online selling the seals. I've emailed Madison as they seem to be the importer for shimano but no reply yet.

May try another shop to see if they can fix it.

it will NOT be the seals.

Most shimano brakes this year were throwaway. IE no service parts.

It WILLl be a poor bleed.

  • You probably won't get a reply from madison (I never have). Use their webby to find the closest official shimano selling LBS.
