Just a thought, but . . .

Thinking of an all round bike for a very good price.
Start with a Specialized Tricross Singlecross 2009 and fit a set of Alfine wheels and a Sora 8 speed brake/shifter.

Less than £500 for a winter / commuter bike - wotcha think?

Is there anything I haven't considered?
Is the Sora compatible with the Alfine?

Another useful comment frrom the troll

Can't see why that's not actually a bl00dy good idea, i reckon, however, the wheels wont take a Sora cassette :?

IIRC the Singlecross won't take a standard cassette & rear mech, hence the idea of using an Alfine hub gear.

It retains the single speed look too.

    Anyway, just a thought

If you decide that it works, I'll give you the shifter free of charge.
  • I bought one of those very Hargroves Singlecrosses three weeks ago, very happy!

But I digress, the frame takes 120 OLD hubs and I believe the Alfine (on my Pylon8, got for 300 squids new in March) is a 135 OLD hub.

Might be other options, but you could fit a S3X 3-speed fixed hub...

I'm looking at building an Alfine hub for my go-anywhere bike - currently run as an SS. The Alfine hub is 135mm OLN so simply won't fit your Singlecross - I'm also not sure that the Sora shifter cable-pull will work the Alfine hub - which has a dedicated shifter. JTEK do a bar-end mounted shift lever that works though
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • You've linked to a front wheel - an alfine rear is over £200 with a hub gear.

    Yeeouw!

    My mistake.

It starts looking damned expensive now!

Hopefully not too O.T. but I could do with some quick input here :
Seriously considering a Tricross but wondering about the sizing : I would normally plump for a 55cm horionntal TT but this comes in a 54 (545mm) or 56 (560mm) so ...
Is what I gather the geo to be a bit more upright than a normal dropped-bar bike result in people being happy with what might appear to be a slightly longer/bigger frame than normal ?

Check out this link http://www.bikerevuk.com/ and go to custom bike gallery and Special Winter Bike, there is a shifter that will work with Alfine.
