Hi.
At the moment I'm riding a pretty awfull groupset it's a mix of sora (shifters and derailleur), tektro brakes and some unbranded chainset and a shimano square taper bb. I'm looking upgrade as I have a new frame. I was initially loooking at 105 as it seems like a good groupset for what I want being an intermediate rider who ocasionally races. I've now started considering tiagra as its slighltly cheaper and as I'm a teenager I can't spend too much. Is there that much difference between the two apart from having 2 extra gears on 105? Is it worth getting Tiagra? What are your thoughts are there any other viable alternatives?

Thanks alot :D

Even as a Campag fan, I would opt for the 105 groupset if they were my only two options. The 105 has a long pedigree and constantly wins praises for performance and value, it seems robust for your needs and spares are not likely to be an issue.

As far as I am aware, isn't Sora being phased out? If so, spares or replacement parts might become more of an issue. I also don't think it's the prettiest of groupsets, if that's important to you.

    But sora is Shimano?

That is an example of the blind leading the blind.
  • Yes Sora is Shimano

New Tiagra due out to cure the left-hand lever breakage issue whne used as a double (105 can have same probs when not set up properly whenused for double front chainset). Decide on how much to spend, that will decide which groupset you`ll be getting

Those Veloce groupsets around the same price look a bit more tempting don't you think
  • i'd go for veloce given the choice ... cheaper than tiagra or shimano and likely to last a bit longer(at least in terms of your patience - the 105 l-h shifter is particularly prone to problems as it's double/triple compatible)
Life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it.
  • Get the 105, seems a mid-range group that you can choose to upgrade/ mix and match with higher (10 speed) groups, should you want to......and you will want to
