I have a SRAM PC850 chain with 9 spd. It just fits on a 9 spd and claims it compatible but primarily for 7-8 spd. It works but is awfully close on the sprockets. I like something much better.

What are my options?

Would a 10spd run better on a 9 spd being thinner?

Thanks.

9spd SRAM, such as the 971

or a X9 KMC, as said.

Given you're running a 9sp, why are you not running a chain intended to do so?! SRAM 951, 971 or 991 (depending upon budget/shinyness) will work fine.

I understand the SRAM are highly rated and compatible with Shimano. I had the chain before i upgraded to 9 spd. So i didn't want to swap it unnecessary.

    The ad claim of PC850
"Accurate shifting, excellent wear resistance, and superior durability with 8 and 9 speed compatibility: the SRAM PowerChain II won't let you down."

    Another ad.

So hence my confusion of which PC850 i got.

The 8 in the model refers to 8 spd so i thinking ii better off with a official 9 spd. The more i use it, the more i think a good 9 spd will be that bit slicker and sit better and move cleaner through the rear derailleur.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tempted to get the KMC or a SRAM.

Ideally like a chain that has good protection from surface rust as well, due to the lots of rain here.

What i wanted to mention was i got a new Shimano 9 spd 105 rear derailleur. It all works fine but it is noiser on the cogs than the old one for no apparent reason. The chain is not touching the side of the metal cage at all. It could be the the chain is coming off at a slightly more acute angle. Maybe i need to let it settle in as the chain is about 6 months old. I hoping a new chain would solve the noise issue as well.

I found the problem to the noise. The rear hanger is slightly bent causing a angle coming off the R/D.

Sorry to bogart the thread - but which KMC 10-Speed chain do people recommend? The top of the line one? Or something a little cheaper?

I heard it mostly marketing, that rear derailleurs are not speed specific, you can get any derailleur to work on any speed. But I wonder, are certain speed R/D cogs matched in thickness to the chain speed, like the cassette to fit better.

I think nickel, zinc coating give better protection against the elements.

If i go SRAM i get the better 991.

I settled on the SRAM 971 in the end. It fitted today and now runs smooth and peachy with less effort. Thanks.

Just a guess, but the jockey wheels on some certain speed derailleurs, probably have different number of teeth as well as thickness to other speed R/D's affecting there travel with a different speed chain. So getting a match could be best. OR maybe 8/9/10 spd are all the same? :? Be interested to know, as i upgraded from a older mech.
