A step too far?

OK, this one's about adding bling to a bike. There seems to always have been a trend for building bikes with colour schemes in trials biking, and most MTBers are doing it now too.

Imagine you have a bike and it is say black and so most of the components match the black already, and your decals are another; let's say blue  and you want to add some more blue to make it look fancy...

But when is matching colours a step too far?

Blue Handlebars
Blue Seat post
Blue Seat post Clamp
Blue Stem
Blue Grips
Blue Pedals
Blue Cable outers
Blue headset cap
Blue Headset spacers
Blue Saddle
Blue Crank bolts
Blue Chain ring bolts
Blue QR Skewers
Blue Rotors
Blue Hubs
BLue Lizard skins

What do you guys think?

    *throws up* sounds awful

I don't mind a tiny tiny bit of blingage but blue bars, stem, seatpost, seat  *throws up again*

I know what you mean, I would only go with small bits like the QR skewers and seatpost clamps etc. Just trying to establish where others draw the line.

Basically, my bike is too black and I need some more blue to break it up. But i can see myself going totally crazy and fitting all of the above before I am done

It needs to be little and spread out if you want to do it. I have blue bits on my pace, if I was to list it, it would sound a lot but they are just small bits like floating rotors, bore caps resivoir caps and hubs.

Personally I think things like the bars, stem and post will be a tad too far. You might get away with the blue stem. Try a bit of white on it :?:

Mine is also very black - I bought XT SPDs mainly because - they are black.
Same with the carbon bottle cage.

Much easier to stay black than blue though.

It can never be too black :) Maybe some blue rotor bolts and cable/grip clamps but that's all.

Just did a quick search and found these:

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=34960

I have the seatpost clamp and Hope headset cap in blue on the bike already, I am thinking maybe QR skewers, pedals and headset spacers and leave it at that...
  • My new build is going to be a Grey frame with the following red bits:

Atomlab Pimp spokes (Subject to sizing confirmation)
    Hope Pro II hub
    Hope headset
Odi Ruffian with extra lock jaw clamps (grey grips with red clamps)
    Middleburn RS8 5bolt, red spider
    floating rotors
    Wellgo MG1
    QR (rear only)
    Alligator I-link gear outers
    Hope X2 Bore Cap
    Straitline Lever Blade set
    Goodridge Braided Brake hoses
    Crank Bolt

    Also considering (in red)

    USE Alien seatpost
    Brave Airbase bars

But they'll be the last bits I buy, so I can see how the rest of the bike looks first, then make a decision based on that.

HOWEVER. I'm talking there about building the bike from scratch, not replacing existing bits. Doubt I'd be going that far replacing stuff that already came with a bike.

I was debating white bars for mine actually.

It's a pity they don't make rear mechs in white too :(

I dunno, i know they're doing the X0/9 in colours now but i didn't think white was on it.

Yeah I looked and only found those 3 while looking for blue

Chances of all the 'blues' matching and not clashing?

Far easier to go all black and then apply some highlights. Meaning that black is pretty much black.

Yeah, that's why I am thinking small things like QR skewers, bar ends and Pedals to go with the seatclamp and headset cap I already have fitted.

small stuf is OK, like bolts, seatpost clamps, QR sqewers, maybe brakes and flating rotors, and if you are really sad i supose chain rings are all right.. but stuff like bars, stem, seatpost, just no... NO...NO...NO
stuff like pedal pins are pretty cool though...
    I like bikes and stuff

Speaking purely from a designers point of view..... accent colour should be treated as a highlight, assuming you're after a tasteful looking bike that is.

Too much of a secondary colour and the bike will look overdone.... think Liberace.... or some pimped up rap star.

But hey... if that's your thing... go for it.

Good luck with the USE alien seatpost in red, I waited nearly 2 1/2 months for USE to get their asses in gear to get one to me and when they did it was the wrong size. Bought a joplin instead
