What size rear derailleur?

H,i buying a new shimano xt shadow for my trance X3 (08) and due to my very small brain am stumped at what size to buy. When i look at chain reaction cycles it offers 3 different types of the same derailleur, small medium and large, which one do i pick ! :? is there a formula sort of thing to work out what size i need? thanks

I THINK short is for one front ring, medium for double ring, and long for triple.
