Knee Pain

Hi All,

Woke up this morning with pain in my right knee. The best way to describe it is that the pain is over the top and front of the knee. While resting it's fine, but walking up the stairs is when the pain kicks in. Granted, it's not a killer of a pain but it's there all the same. I've not increased my riding lately more the opposite, with the ice and cold weather I've probally slowed down and down less distance, so I don't think over exertion has caused it.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be and more importantly how to get shot of it and stop it happening again. I have the week off next week and had a few long rides in mind but I have the feeling they may be out of the window....

Thanks for any advice.

Cheers

  • I'd advise to perhaps seek medical help rather than ask people on forums what might be wrong and how to fix it.

Don't mean to sound patronizing, it's just that none of us can help you other than to suggest you 'might' have this or that.
Tendinitis is the inflammation or irritation of the tendons. The tendons hold muscle to bone and become irritated due to injury or overuse. This may cause pain or swelling, especially near joints. Tendinitis may be treated with rest, immobilization with a brace, medications and/or physical therapy.

You could have Tendinitis for example, which is one of several common problems, then again you might not, you need to be examined by professionals.

They'll probably just tell you to rest up though.

    Thanks for your input.

Rest is the last thing I want, I've only just returned to cycling after several years away and I've made sure that I don't exert myself too much during the first few months

The reason I posted here is because I looking for advice from other forum member who have maybe suffered the same problem.

Anyway, sounds like a trip to the doctors, if I'm lucky I'll get an appoitment for sometime in the spring

    Cheers

  • I can't help with your dodgy knee, it really could be anything, but for what it's worth, I have suffered from knee pain (right knee) for a few years, mainly from playing football, and it took me a while to set my bike up to aleviate the problem. What I would say though is that it is always worse in the winter months when it's cold, which means I cannot cycle for more than a couple of consecutive days.

The other poster is dead right though, knee problems cannot be diagnosed by a qualified doctor on a forum, let alone by any of us, you should just rest it up until it gets back to normal, which is all a doctor will tell you. If it re-occurs then I'd visit your doctor and get it checked out.

  • Knees are pretty much the most complicated joint in your body. It could, as has been said, be anything.
    See your GP
"it rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again"
  • Anterior knee pain. could be patello-femoral. Could be other things too though.

Advice: get your bike setup checked, see doctor/ see sports physio.
I has similar but it was due to the saddle being set too far forwards (new to road biking, from MTB)
Yours may be the same but could be entirely different. Interweb fora are no place for a diagnosis.

If it continues it will be well worth paying a few quid for a trip to a sports physio rather than the doc. Doc will probably just give you anti inflamitarys (if thats how you spell it) and tell you to rest it. A physiowill be able to give you a rough idea what it could be and advice on prevention and exercises to help it.

My knees are nackered, I've been having re-hab and physio since about June last year, its a slow process but they are getting there. According to my physio the problem is due to all my years of cycling. Because through cycling I have over developed my quads they are pulling my kneecaps outwards causing pain. My hamstrings and VMO's are under developed so I now have to concentrate on exercising and strengthening them to couneract it.

It's not to say that's whats wrong with yours, just thought I would share my experience with you.

  • yup, this doc prescribes non steroidal anti-inflammatories (Ibuprofen etc) and then refers on to physio to sort it out :D

It took me a while to get refered to physio, theres a running joke with Army doctors, they prescribe Ibuprofen and tubigrip for everything and be done with it :lol:

The same went for my other half, she developed a bad back from riding, the civilian GP just dished out the Ibuprofen and left it at that. She decided to pay for a sports physio to check it out, he reckoned it was her recent change from clipless to flats that could have caused it, he gave her some stretches to do and suggested she went back to clipless. She did all that and not a niggle since.

  • Got up this morn looked down at left knee and there was a lump of what felt like a gel which was moving around, as this morn gone on it seems to have gone down but it feels sore had some paracetemals
think I banged it the other day on the corner of an arm chair
  • Yep. I've been out of action for about a week now with an unknown knee problem (clicking, pain, tightness, etc.). GP didn't prescribe anything, seems to think it's "just one of those things" and will heal with rest; I injure quite easily, but am not convinced he's right on this. I'm taking the ibuprofen anyway.

I don't know about you, but I'm going stir-crazy not being able to get out in this gorgeous sunny winter weather. It's not just the MTB'in, either, I can't do any bloody exercise at all.

Where would one find a specialist sports... doctor... person to get this looked at? And will I need to sell a kidney to fund it?

I'm sure there will be one round your way, try googling. Your looking at about the £30 an hour mark for a physio to look at it. You may only need the 1 session to get an idea of whats wrong and advice on exercises/stretches to sort it.

It sounds like inflammation of the synovial membranehich are the soft tissues around the knee, if you have twised, stumbled or had and impact. especialy in this cold weather then this can happen. If you can take asprin this will help to see if it is a soft tissue or mechanical problem. Go to the doctors get it x-rayed and ask about seeing a rhumatologist as unexpected arthritic episodes need to be tracked down otherwise it can go on for ages

I concur. I had shocking knee problems at the start of sept.

Saw a physio several times, she said, tight quads, so we worked on that. Saw a holisitc therapist, she said poor lymph system was causing it, saw a doctor, she had no idea, saw a decent bike shop. They said left foot was different to ride foot so bought new shoes with inserts as well as having my left cleat further back than the right. Also looked ay my position on the bike which had been fine (at least I thought it)

It has solved it, but it took an age for the niggle to go and only last week, for the first time in three months did I ride a solid 65 miles in one hit without feeling like it may be my last.

    Dont muck about with it.
  • Well, after a second visit to the GP it's a damaged anterior cruciate (which is why it is "loose"). I'm hoping work will stump up for at least some of the cost of physio, but I'm told I'll be out for a while yet.

So just as the doc said earlier in the thread... anti-inflammatories and physio. Marvellous, happy new year!!

I had knee problems a while back too (and they still play up a bit), like bristolpete, mine was muscle related and quickly diagnosed with a visit to a local physio. They charged about £35 which isn't ideal, but I feel it was worth it for the peace of mind that I wasn't doing major damage and I was also reffered to a guy who did a bike fitting for me much cheaper than the local shop.
  • I had the same on my right knee. turns out the right SDP wasn't setup inline for my right foot. i had to try a few different positions but it seems to be OK now.
    LOL road riding.
