Its a slight gap/tear in my Continental Ultra Sport tyre. It was from a stone which punctured my tyre, and re inflating left that... Will it become a blow out? Dangerous to ride with?

Thanks.

  • ride it - and tell us what happens
  • haha its pretty deep...some of it goes right the way through to the tube (as you would expect considering it punctured the tyre!)

Awesome, so i can quote you on that in the event that i kill myself if it explodes? :D

Did you know that at 60mph, you wear through skin at 1 inch every second? ouch.

i find cuts like that are big enough to let grit work its way in and puncture the tube easily again in the same place. You can get temporary patches for ripped tubes, maybe try them if it is not too bad.

Or just get a new tyre.

Sounds like your concerned about it. If so, don't be nervous and pussyfoot about asking us about it. Just get a new one.
  • im not that nervous about it. Just heard that fact somewhere the other day and decided to share.

    Besides, im invincible.
  • hahah ok then. It WILL HOLD.

Lol, feel free to quote me if you get killed!

It's just nicked. The carcass weave runs diagonally across the tyre, so it's quite tolerant of cuts, I wouldn't be concerned with anything less than 10mm myself.

As harpo says stuff can wedged in there, if you want to prevent that just superglue the cut.

Thats if you stay on the same spot i assume .If you do commando rolls hten you'll just wear out like a tyre.
  • The cut in the rubber can be closed up by letting the tyre down and putting super glue in the cut then hold the cut closed long enough for the glue to set. Super glue works well on natural rubber. Not much use on butyl tubes though. If the carcass is damaged then probably best get new tyre.
