This is probably old news but I learnt today from Tandem Club Journal that John Helms has died.
Not only was he a great cartoonist for very many years but he was a lovely bloke. I was asked to invite him to be guest of honour at our club dinner because I had some contact with him through being the then editor of the Tandem Club Journal. His only doubt was that it took place in early January and he was concerned about possible weather problems for his ride from Cheshire to Derby. He cycled everywhere to club appointments, even when giving slide shows.
As it turned out he agreed but phoned me from Buxton because he was knackered and I abandoned my plan to ride out to meet him and fetched him the car. He was the perfect guest both at the dinner and at our house where he spent the night. We still have the personalised cartoon he gave us as a gift for feeding him.
The following day we took him to the Cat and Fiddle and launched him into Cheshire. We occasionally met him and his wife at York CTC rally and he always remembered his short stay with us.
A generous unassuming and very intelligent guy. He'll be missed by more people than me, I'm sure.

Old cyclists never die; they just fit smaller chainrings ... and pedal faster

Thanks Geoff
A sad day - but what memories he has left.
