Forgive me I have sinned !

Went out last night with a mate and rode 25 miles through the New Forest around Ringwood in F***ing freezing weather. Wind was howling, temperature sub-zero and ground rock hard.
Great riding but you couldn't stop for too long. The water in my Backpack froze partially, my mates gears all froze up where the water splashed on them and his rear light froze too.
We dived into the pub at the end of our ride and the landlord very kindly allowed us in (despite being covered in mud etc). After a swift couple of pints it was back out into the cold for the final 5 miles home, and here's the sin..........................
When I got home....................I put my bike straight in the garage without washing, lubing or anything. All I could think about was a hot cup of tea and a steaming shower !! I know it means extra work to clean it later but couldn't face it.
I repent unresevedly. I promise not to do it again (well sort of)

No fear, you're not a roadie. It'll keep till the weekend.
  • I throw my bike in the shed like that after every ride!!

It's a win-win situation. You get to be lazy and you get an excuse to upgrade if it causes wear to any components.
  • As long as the water stays frozen, you'll see reduced damage from putting it away wet.

    This.

My lack of cleaning is supporting the UK bike industry.

When I say cleaned. I mean getting the worst of the crud off of the drivetrain, gears and the spd's and drying the chain, crank and cassette. Quick spray of Teflon impregnated spray to protect the bits n bobs and hey presto.
I never worry about the general cleanliness of the frame etc as it's a proper MTB that gets used for the right reasons. It's never gleaming but I do like to look after the important bits.
But last night was just too damn cold.
I justified it by feeling very good about getting out in the first place. Can't say I lost too much sleep over it.
I will of course make up for it at the weekend

    I do that quite regularly.

The only thing I make sure is good before the next ride is the drive train and the fork stanchions.

My hose was frozen when I got home at the weekend so I thought, sod it. Poor thing doesn't know what's happened to it, it's used to being pampered.

We rode in the New Forest on Wednesday night (it was our club xmas dinner - which justifies the santa hat I had duct-taped to my cycle helmet.... ) and it was FREEZING!

So I too need to ask forgiveness as a) we only moved the bikes out of the car this morning, and b) we just shoved them straight in the garage without cleaning them

    I feel very naughty!

Miss Notax, I haven't forgotten your invite to join you for Wednesday night riding from Fordingbridge but it's tricky to plan a free night in advance.
    Family stuff etc etc.
Maybe in the New Year ?

No worries :D We ride throughout the year, so whenever you're free give us a shout! For some strange reason there are usually more people in the group in the summer though...

washing bikes after each ride is for roadies. Or those with way too much time on their hands.
Mountain bikes were designed to get muddy!!!
it's like a badge of honour - "yes this is my bike, yes it gets used properly!"

I still maintain that too much bike maintainance is bad for your bike.

  • Got back in from my ride today and thought I'd clean both my bikes as the hardtail was a mess from last night but the outside tap was froze so thought sod it, cup of tea and defrost nuts in the shower time.

Luckily all the mud had froze into big lumps so just broke it all off and now both bikes arent to bad - good times
