buying a new bike advice

Hi all,
I am thinking of getting a new bike. Not sure what exactly I want. I like to ride 3-4 hr rides usually in the hills. I do the odd time trial but nothing serious.
So, I have a few questions:
1. I have always used 53/34. This is ok but I do ride up some very steep hills. I can muscle up them but I have always thought of going compact. Any disadvantages? I did briefly try riding a compact and it seemed ok on the flat.
2. Any advantage moving from 172 to 170 crank arm? One bike I am looking at only offers 170. This may suit me as my inseam is less than 80cm. Will i notice the difference?
3. Was looking at Planet X, Ribble. Though I am nervous about buying online without trying.
4. I want a carbon frame as the few I have rode seem more comfortable. Any carbon frames to avoid?
Cheers
