All,

Can you read this please and tell me if the bike would be covered in the back garden locked to a large fence (can't be lifted over) which is into a concrete floor.

I'm not 100% either way about whether it is or not.

Evans Cycles | Bike Insurance | Cycle Insurance | Online Bike Shop

Requirements for where you keep your bicycle

The bicycle must be kept inside and any security devices made operational

All external doors must utilise a 5 lever mortice deadlock or 5 lever padlock
or
The bicycle must be secured using one of our approved locks, through the frame, to an immovable object.

I'm not sure if it means it has to be inside... or if the OR means it can be outside the building but secured as described

  • I can tell you 100% that if your bike is not "inside" then that insurance will be void.

Whats 9:41 got to do with anything, thats the time I responded, not the time you wanted this question answered.

Just ring up the callcentre when its open, 9am to 7pm Mon to Fri for 100% confirmation. You cant ask on here and take someones word as gospel, no one here (well there may be the very slight offchance someone might be an underwriter for that particular insurance policy) will know for sure only they can answer it.
  • Guys, cmon, read the policy. It states it has to be inside, no ifs, no buts, no "it's locked to a 40ton block of concrete in the garden". Policy is void, 100%, if it's outside. Indian CS might say it's ok, but when it comes to claim, Good luck!

If they say its ok, you claim and then they refuse you just state that person X in the callcentre on day/time X told you it is and they'll have a very hard time not honoring it.

They won't need to honour it, they'll refer you back to the written policy which is what you agree to when you sign for the insurance, which specifically states "the bike must be kept inside". The alternate option is to keep the bike in the house chained to a 40ton block of concrete in the garden ;)

my home insurance covers me for items stolen from my garden upto £1000 as standard.
Ive not checked the ins & outs but for me that means my bike would be covered
    Boardman Hybrid Pro

    Planet X XLS
  • Most home insurance policies do, assuming you take out the personal possesions option. Most standard policies however exclude "cycles" and you have to pay extra. In your case Deffler you would probably be covered even if your bike wasn't locked up.
  • Probably not - def need to phone and check as they'll do anything to get out of a payout.

My advice would be to stick it on your home insurance, again check the small print so it's all clear what you need to do to be covered.

The home insurance option is a lot cheaper than bike specific and I don't think their rules are as anal. I called my home insurer, told them what bike I've got, where I keep it, how I lock it and asked where I can take it. They gave me a quote for adding it on to the policy and sent me out the info. Bingo, I'm insured for a fifth of the price quoted for bike specific insurance!
