okay here is what i have seen.......
(but first background info)
A long time ago in a far off land called millbrook in sunny cornwall there was a boy. (me) Anyway i used to own a 2005 spesh hardrock sport disc. After a couple of years of proper hard thrashing it started to die. It had had many upgrades and i used to use it for freeride and some DH. When the bike started to die the forks broke,
the steerer worked itself loose in the crown and they were buggered. I was given a set of 2003 marzocchi dirt jumper 3's by my dads mate for free, but all the time i owned them they made a horrible cracking noise which sounded more like a horrifying click. My mate now wants some different (air) forks for his hardtail. I said he could have my old spare set, but i would have to look at them first.
(now down to buisness)
So i have just been up the work shop and i have stripped these forks down and took the springs out. Here are the problems
> The o-ring on the alloy valve has perished in places. (acceptbale considering age)
> The oil needs changing. (acceptable considering age)
> Everything needs cleaning. (Obivously)
But the stupid things which are not acceptable. (seriously):
I have now realised why these fors feel and sound $h!te.
The alloy block things underneath the valves have been homemade and do not fit properly and the holes where they should be bored out arent drilled staright. The spacers between the springs and the alloy blocks are, wait for it...... made of two pence pieces which have hole drilled in them.

i am now laughing soooo hard it hurts. I reallly cannot believe it. I thought my dads mate was doing me a favor. Despite his kind act after 2 weeks of having the forks on my spesh i bought my gt. ( which i have now sold) That has actually made my day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've currently got a 1p drilled out on my engine sump works well!!!

yeah. thought it was illegal to deface a coin. hahahaha. the thing is the hole isnt even drilled in the center though. hahaha0

So what?
Ok, he fluffed the implementation, but the idea's sound, we used to recommend 2p coins because they fit inside Marzocchi forks with 32mm stanchions so beautifully. If I'd ever bothered to drop my Z1 FR2s down to 110mm, the spacers I'd have used would have been drilled 2ps.
You damn kids...0 -
yeah. ok.point taken. mate is it just me but i am training to be an engineer and even i can see this is the wrong way to do things. i class it as a bodge. the holes arent even drilled in the center.0

Well i can pretty much say that mines pretty central as i drilled and faced it on a lathe.
We often use coinage for things around the workshop such as spacers for clamps.0 -
Hang on- your dads mate gave you free forks when you needed them and youre complaining cos theyre bodged. Theres no pleasing some people.0
