    Why the rolleyes?

He has a pretty phenomenal record. Comparable to any other top sportsperson, I would suggest?
  • Ah, but a phenomenal record of what? ;)

I'd say Tiger Woods as athlete of the decade was a bit of a no brainer.

Who else could there have been? Roger Federer maybe.

Agreed, better than any other top sportsperson I reckon.

    His adultery is irrelevant.

The award is the "Athlete of the Decade" but its focusing on sport as a whole
The award is recognition for a sportsman who has single-handedly dominated his sport throughout the decade.

Under that spec I can see why Woods has won it but I understand that some people won't say that golfers are athletes....having never played golf I can't comment on the physicality of it myself.

Without getting into the what is and isn't a sport debate, the award is open for any sport so say a darts player could win, in my personal view a darts player isn't an athlete. The title of the award is a bit misleading.

Unless I've totally misunderstood what the OP was on about and you're actually having a dig at Tiger Woods. In that case I think he's a great golfer and deserves the award as he has dominated the sport!

Even my own hatred of golf wouldn't stop me decrying Woods as the best of the decade, although calling him an athlete is a bit.....well.

And with Federer coming 3rd...humm, not sure. I'm a huge fan and he's been the most dominant on the tour for a while, but I can decide whether a lot of it is due to a weaker field.

    In your opinion.

Many many people would disagree with you.

What's the difference between the two? Rugby is also a game...

Yes, but you won't have that with cycling (independently of doping cases). People won't be arguing about that.

Golf IMO is not a sport either.

I'd like to know how the holier-than-thou brigade decide what is a sport and what isn't.

And don't quote that fat couch potatoe Hemmingway, how many medals did he get?

Should have been Lance or Usain Bolt. Proper athletes. I like golf and play regular but I dont think you can be classed as an 'athlete', but then is the definition of an athlete?

BTW, golf is a sport IMO

SPORT: Competitive, has a Winner/Loser, has rules.
RECREATION: To "recreate" yourself, physically or mentally.
LEISURE: Time when you are not working, therefore a "Concept of Time". Unpaid activity.

Thing is, Fishing is classed as a "Sport." Does the fish know the rules, and guess who nearly always wins?

Tiger is a phenominal sports person, even the best of the past decade, but Athlete. Hmmm, there are far better Athletes who are not as effective a sportsperson.

There are several definitions of 'athlete' on google..
"A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts".

    Another is:
"A person trained to compete in sports".

Having said that, I wouldn't class darts players as athletes. Nor snooker players. I'd say you ought to at least break sweat if you're going to be classed as an athlete... (through physical exertion).

    Results:
    1. Tiger Woods
    2. Lance Armstrong
    3. Roger Federer
    4. Michael Phelps
    5. Tom Brady (American footballer)
    6. Usain Bolt

Lance you could argue for, but Usain Bolt? It says athlete of the last decade. As great as Bolt's achievements have been, he hasn't dominated a his sport for a decade, has he???
